Robben Island Tickets

The museum publishes two products, each with a South African rate and an international rate — the dual pricing every state site in Cape Town uses, so the two figures below are printed side by side, never merged. All figures are from robben-island.org.za read in Q3 2026; the dollar conversions are at the site's fixed rate of R1,000 ≈ $62.13.

The standard tour is the 3.5-hour ferry-bus-prison sequence described on the Robben Island page. The weekend walking tour swaps the bus for guided time on foot inside a 09:00–14:30 window, Friday to Sunday only, at more than double the standard fare — worth it for photographers and anyone who found the bus circuit rushed on a first visit, not the right first ticket for most people. No free-entry category is stated on the portal: no birthday special, no free day, no city-pass inclusion — the Cape Town City Pass's own attraction list does not mention Robben Island.

The homepage does state that a free cap and water bottle come with the tour.

The portal sells four sailings a day and each carries a fixed passenger count, so capacity is hard-limited in a way a museum's is not. In the December–January peak, sailings fill weeks ahead; through the rest of the year a few days' notice is normally enough, and winter mid-week sailings often have same-day seats. Those timings are our advice from watching the calendar, not the museum's — its site prints no sell-out warning at all, which catches out travellers who assume a quiet website means a quiet boat.

The second squeeze is subtractive: when swell suspends a day's sailings, everyone holding those tickets rebooks onto the following days, and a calendar that looked open on Monday is gone by Wednesday. This is why the resale allocations keep their value — operators like the 3.5-hour package hold their own seat blocks and often show availability after the portal has none.

Book as soon as your Cape Town dates are fixed. The names on the booking should match passports: resale operators state that traveller names and children's birth dates are collected at booking, and the package with pickup asks for IDs outright.

Three clauses separate the resale listings compared here, and two of them cost people their trip.

First, the cancellation deadline. Three of the four cards cancel free up to 24 hours before the sailing. The 4-hour guided package does not: its window closes 3 days and 1 hour before the start — book it on Monday for Thursday and you are already past the deadline the moment you pay. It is also sold to international travellers only. Its virtues are real (2,264 reviews, tickets delivered by WhatsApp), but pick it only when your dates are certain.

Second, the voucher is not the ferry ticket. On the 3.5-hour package the operator issues the actual boarding ticket against your passport details after booking; the GetYourGuide voucher alone will not board you. Watch for the follow-up message and have passports at hand.

Third, the combo maths. The 8-hour island-plus-Table-Mountain day includes the ferry and island entry but NOT the cableway ticket, which is R490 extra at the cableway's own pricing — price the whole day before comparing it against booking the two sights separately.

• Pick the date and a sailing — 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 or 15:00. The ticket is for that sailing, not for the day.
• Choose the fare per traveller: international adult $37.28 (R600), under 18 $19.26 (R310); South African rates R400/R210 apply on SA ID.
• Pay online and keep the confirmation on your phone; the barcode is scanned at Nelson Mandela Gateway.
• Be at the Gateway 45 minutes before departure — the boat does not wait, and Waterfront parking queues in season.
• Re-check the museum's channels the evening before and the morning of your sailing for swell suspensions.

Before you press pay

Book a morning sailing early in your trip, for the rebooking margin and the calmer water. If your dates are soft, the free-cancellation resale seats are the safer spend despite the premium. And if you are choosing between the standard and the walking tour, take the standard first: the walking tour is a second-visit ticket at $87.00 (R1,400), sold Friday to Sunday only.

Swell suspensions are the one certainty to plan for on this crossing. The museum announces them on its own channels — sometimes days ahead for a forecast blow, sometimes on the morning — and handles rebooking and refunds for portal tickets through those same channels; no automatic-refund policy wording is printed on the pages we fetched, so keep your confirmation and contact the museum directly if a suspension takes your date. On the resale side the position is cleaner on paper: the 4-hour package's listing states outright that bad-weather cancellations are refunded in full, and the other GetYourGuide listings sit under the platform's standard operator-cancellation refund.

The practical rule outranks the paperwork: a cancelled sailing on day two of a trip is an errand, on the last morning it is a loss no refund fixes.
